About Sprega
Sprega Kamen d.o.o. brings Dalmatia's dimension stone producers under one roof: three quarries and a processing plant of our own at Plano near Trogir. Two limestones come out of them, Plano and Dolit, as blocks, as gang-sawn slabs, and as elements cut to the size the project asks for.
From bench to slab, with nobody in between
Stone usually passes through three companies before it reaches a site: one quarries it, one saws it, one sells it. Here all three are the same hands, so any surface we deliver traces back to the block it was sawn from and to the bench that block came off. That is not paperwork. It is the only way that, two years on, a surface being extended or made good can be cut from the same face as the first delivery.
Deposit
Three deposits: Adriakamen and Plano Lithos at Plano near Trogir, Dolačka ljut near Omiš. Blocks are cut free with diamond wire and driven to the plant minutes away.
Sawing
Gang saws and single-blade block saws reduce the block to slabs. A calibrating machine brings them to an even thickness, bridge saws and an edge polisher bring them to size, and a profiling machine to shape.
Finishing
Honing, polishing, brushing, sandblasting and bush-hammering, alone or in combination. The same stone leaves in nine finishes.
Delivery
Blocks, gang-sawn slabs, or elements cut to size for the project and ready to be set.
The forms the stone leaves in
Block, slab and finished element all leave through the same gate, and which of the three you take usually follows from what you do: a merchant takes blocks and gang-sawn slabs, a contractor takes elements cut to the drawing and marked by position, so that nothing has to be cut on site. All three are the same material, non-combustible untreated and classed A1 without test, natural stone being listed as such in Commission Decision 96/603/EC.
Blocks
Stone as it leaves the bench, cut free with diamond wire and squared into a regular block. It is sold this way too, unsawn.
Gang-sawn slabs
The block reduced to full-size slabs, in the thickness the project asks for. They are kept in the order they were sawn, so the figure of the stone runs on from one to the next.
Cut-to-size elements
Facade panels, floors, treads and risers, sills, pool and wall copings, thresholds and profiles, cut to the drawing and marked by position.
Setts and rock-faced stone
Paving for public ground, setts, split stone for dry-stone walling and rock-faced blocks, and technical stone for embankments and sea walls.
Who quarries, who processes
Each quarry is run by its own company, and Sprega Kamen runs the plant at Plano. A block from any of the three deposits comes straight to our saw, with no trader in between, so every slab can be traced back to the bench it came off.
Where we stand
The plant and two of the quarries stand at Plano near Trogir; the third is in the hills behind Omiš. Stone is heavy, so carriage is a large part of what it costs on site. The coastal road is two kilometres away, the motorway twelve, Split twenty-five.

Where it goes
Most of the stone stays on the coast it was quarried from, in promenades, facades and terraces between Zadar and Makarska and on the islands of Pag, Čiovo and Dugi otok. In Europe it is built into Montenegro, Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany, and beyond Europe into China and Korea, on a run of buildings clad in this stone. Today the largest export markets are China, Italy and Turkey.
Trade fairs
Stone is chosen by hand and by eye. That is why the slabs go out to the fairs every year, where architects, contractors and merchants can see and feel them before they specify them.

Two stones
Plano and Dolit come out of the same karst and behave differently. Plano is the paler and quieter of the two, Dolit the denser and more durable. Which one goes on a surface is usually decided by how hard that surface is used.
